01 / GETTING STARTED
Set up your watch.
What do I need?
Runner requires watchOS 26 or later. The iPhone companion requires iOS 26 or later. Install Runner on your Apple Watch using the Watch app on your iPhone or the App Store on your watch. The iPhone app lets you preview and customize the display and buy or restore All Metrics.
Which permissions does Runner need?
Allow Runner to save workouts to Apple Health. Allow access to heart rate, walking and running distance, running speed, and active energy for available workout measurements. Outdoor runs also use location access to record the route and elevation. Precise Location improves GPS results.
You control access in your devices’ Health and Privacy & Security settings. Missing sensor values may mean a permission is off; Apple does not let apps check every read-permission choice.
How do I start?
On the watch, choose Prepare. With Precision start enabled, Runner prepares the workout before the clock starts. Once ready, swipe to the controls and choose Start. Turn Precision start off in Runner settings if you prefer to start as soon as preparation finishes.
How do I change between outdoor and indoor running?
Hold the word OUTDOOR or INDOOR on the start screen for one second. Runner confirms the change with haptics. Outdoor mode uses GPS. Indoor mode estimates distance and pace using the watch’s motion sensors, without recording a route or elevation gain.
Do I need my iPhone during the run?
No. Runner records workouts on Apple Watch. Set your layout and sync any All Metrics purchase before leaving your phone behind.
02 / DURING A RUN
Your workout controls.
Pause, resume, and finish
Swipe sideways from the metrics to the controls. Choose Pause to pause and Resume to continue. Stop pauses the workout and asks whether you want to end it or continue. After ending, Runner saves the workout to Apple Health.
Workouts with less than 30 seconds of active time are discarded. Paused time does not count toward active time.
Use the Action button
On Apple Watch Ultra, select Runner in Settings → Action Button → Workout → App. With Precision start on, the first press prepares and the next starts. During the workout, the Action button opens the paused end-workout options. Press the Action button and side button together to pause or resume.
Switch metrics with Double Tap
On an Apple Watch that supports Double Tap, raise your wrist to wake the display and keep Runner’s metrics screen visible during your workout. Tap the thumb and index finger of your watch hand together twice. Runner switches the main value to the next available cycling metric, without touching the display.
Current pace and average pace are included for free. All Metrics adds lap pace and, outdoors, elevation gain. Each gesture advances once through the available metrics. Your saved default layout stays the same.
Enable Double Tap in the watch’s gesture settings and Cycle main metrics in Runner settings on Apple Watch or iPhone. Choose a cycling metric, such as PACE, as your main value. Heart rate is a separate layout choice and does not take part in this cycle. You can also tap the main value on the screen to switch.
Double Tap is not switching metrics
Check that your watch supports Double Tap, the display is awake and unlocked, and both gesture and metric cycling settings are enabled. Apple’s Low Power Mode, Sleep Focus, and some accessibility gesture settings can make Double Tap unavailable. See Apple’s help with Double Tap for device compatibility and gesture troubleshooting.
Where is my saved run?
Saved workouts are stored in Apple Health and can be viewed in Apple’s Health and Fitness apps. Outdoor routes are saved when available and permitted. Runner’s watch summary can show a GPS trace after your run; it does not use a map background.
03 / LAYOUT & SYNC
Make it your view.
Change metrics, colors, and weights
Open Runner on iPhone or the layout settings on your watch. Select the top, main, bottom-left, or bottom-right position. Set a metric, color, and supported text weight. Distance and time each appear once. Heart rate can appear at the top or as the main metric. Hide the top row for a larger main value.
My changes are not on the watch
Make sure your Apple Watch is paired and Runner is installed on both devices. Keep the devices connected, then open Runner on each. The iPhone app shows watch installation and connection status. The most recent layout is transferred when the paired devices can communicate; no Runner account is needed.
Kilometres or miles?
Runner follows each device’s measurement-system setting under Language & Region. Metric uses kilometres, minutes per kilometre, and metres. US and UK use miles, minutes per mile, and feet. The watch and phone follow their own settings, so check both if the preview and workout differ.
04 / ALL METRICS
A little more detail.
What is free?
Workout recording, outdoor GPS routes, current pace, average pace, heart rate, distance, active time, and layout customization are included.
What does All Metrics add?
All Metrics unlocks lap pace and elevation gain, plus future premium metrics. It is a single non-consumable purchase, not a subscription. Apple shows your local price in the iPhone app before you buy. Elevation gain is available outdoors only.
Lap pace shows the average pace of the current automatic distance lap. Choose 1, 2, 3, or 5 kilometres or miles under Laps. The lap length and units are fixed when a workout starts; changes apply to your next workout.
How do I restore my purchase?
Open All Metrics in Runner on iPhone and choose Restore Purchases. Use the Apple Account that made the purchase and connect to the App Store. Then connect your Apple Watch so it can receive the unlock. After that, the watch retains the verified access for offline use.
I purchased it, but it still looks locked
Check that the purchase completed and is not awaiting approval. Restore on iPhone, then open Runner with the watch connected. If it stays locked, email us with your Runner build number and the message shown in the app. Do not send payment-card details.
05 / TROUBLESHOOTING
When something is off.
Heart rate or pace shows dashes
Runner uses dashes when readings are missing, invalid, or out of date. Check your Health permissions and watch fit. Give the sensors time to obtain readings. During indoor runs, pace is estimated from distance over recent active time. It can take a little movement before a value appears.
The GPS route or elevation is missing
Check location permission and Precise Location, choose Outdoor mode, and try an area with a clear view of the sky. Indoor runs do not record GPS or elevation gain. A missing route, GPS fix, or reliable elevation does not prevent Runner from saving an otherwise qualifying workout.
The workout did not save
If Runner shows a save error, keep Runner open on the watch and choose Retry. Do not discard the workout unless you intend to remove it. Check that Runner can save workouts to Apple Health. Runner does not provide a separate export or backup for a failed save.
If the workout was shorter than 30 seconds of active time, it was discarded by design. A saved workout can still show a warning if route, distance, or elevation data could not be added.
Still need help?
Email runner@flrgroup.se with your watch model, watchOS and iOS versions, the Runner build number shown in settings, and the steps that led to the problem. Include the exact error text if available. You do not need to send health data or a GPS route.
